STORY

Each Asahi-yaki piece is handcrafted using techniques that have been passed down from one generation to the next within the Matsubayashi family for over 400 years. The sixteen-generation lineage of master ceramists is carried on today by Master Yusuke Matsubayashi, who recently succeeded his father, National Living Treasurer Hosai Matsubayashi. Yusuke-San continues the craft heritage of his ancestors and keeps the family's ceramic tradition alive.

The ceramic works from the Uji region, where Asahi-yaki is located, have gained International interest and recognition; for their centuries-old tradition of ceramic art and the fine quality of clay that the local masters are able to achieve from the pure mountain water of the adjacent Uji River and the local soil.
